Yes. Golden Years has a Folsom office, and it covers Folsom, CA, Shingle Springs, CA and Placerville, CA.
That's worth saying plainly, because a lot of families out that way don't expect it. They assume every home care agency is based in Sacramento and nobody will want to drive out to them, so they start calling agencies much further away than they need to.
If your mom or dad lives in one of those three towns, the help is closer than you might think. Here's Ken, our founder, answering the question himself.
Why families assume nobody will come out to them
It's an easy assumption to make. Search for home care and most of what comes up has a Sacramento address, and it's natural to picture a caregiver sitting in traffic for an hour before they even reach the front door. If you're in Shingle Springs or Placerville, it can feel like you live on the edge of everybody's map.
So families widen the search. They call agencies in other cities, ask whether anyone will make the drive, and sometimes settle for an arrangement that suits the agency's geography better than it suits their parent.
The Folsom office is there so that doesn't have to happen. Folsom, Shingle Springs and Placerville are its area, not somewhere it reaches when it can. There's more about the office on our Folsom home care page.
What a caregiver does on an ordinary morning
Most of home care is ordinary, and that's exactly why it helps.
A typical morning starts with helping your mom get up and get dressed at her own pace. Then the rest of her morning routine, whatever that looks like for her, and breakfast. Then company. Somebody to talk to over a cup of coffee, sit with through the morning news, or walk to the mailbox with.
Written down, it doesn't sound like much. But for a lot of older people the morning is the hardest part of the day to manage alone, and a good start changes how the rest of the day goes. It's also the stretch of the day when family members nearby are usually at work.
Caregivers are matched to your parent on the level of care needed, skill set and personality. The same caregivers stay in the home, so your mom isn't opening the door to a stranger every week.
Overnight help and 24 hour home care
Some families need more than a morning visit. Night can be when things go wrong. A parent gets up confused, or is anxious about being alone after dark, or a trip down the hallway feels riskier at 2am than it does at noon.
Overnight support is there when it's needed. For families who need somebody in the house around the clock, our 24 hour home care has caregivers working in shifts, so somebody is awake and available at any hour.
Dementia care and Alzheimer's care at home
When a parent is living with dementia, a familiar routine and a familiar face matter even more, and a new person in the house can be unsettling.
That's why our dementia care starts slowly on purpose. The first visit is short and low-key, and a family member is there. The caregiver follows your parent's lead instead of arriving with a list of tasks. Often that first visit is a cup of tea and a conversation, nothing more. It's how the match gets made: your parent's schedule, personality, pace and interests.
The same approach carries through to Alzheimer's care at home. The same caregivers, in the same house, keeping to the routine your parent already knows.
What it costs
Cost depends mostly on how many hours of care your parent needs and what kind of care it is. We've written about what drives the number, and the honest answer for your family comes out of the assessment, once we know what a normal week needs to look like.
If you'd like to know more about who we are, Ken has told the story of how Golden Years started in an earlier post about home care in Folsom.
