GOLDEN YEARS HOME CARE

(916) 333-0383

Almost everything written about family caregiving assumes you’re the adult child. Different house, different generation, a life you go back to at the end of the day.

Caring for a spouse is a different situation, and it gets less attention than it should. You’re usually the same age, usually in the same house, and usually doing it alone.

There is no going home

An adult child drives over, helps, and leaves. You don’t.

That’s the part people outside it miss. There’s no shift that ends, no evening off, no distance to recover in. Help with the bathroom at two in the morning is followed by breakfast at seven, by you, again.

It also means nobody sees it. The daughter who visits on Sunday sees an hour. She doesn’t see the other hundred and sixty-seven.

The marriage changes shape

This is the part spouses rarely say out loud.

Helping your wife bathe is not the same as helping your mother bathe. Managing your husband’s medications changes something between you that was never meant to work that way. People describe feeling like staff in their own marriage, and then feel guilty for thinking it.

That feeling is not a failure of love. It’s what happens when one role swallows another.

Bringing in help a few hours a week is often less about the tasks than about getting some of the marriage back. Someone else does the personal care, and you get to be a husband again for an afternoon.

Your own health is the real risk

You’re likely in your seventies or eighties yourself. The lifting, the broken sleep, the skipped appointments, the meals eaten standing up.

Spousal caregivers are notorious for canceling their own doctor’s visits because there’s nobody to sit with their partner for an hour. That’s how a manageable situation becomes two people who need care instead of one.

If you’ve put off something of your own, that’s the clearest sign help is overdue.

Nights are what break people

Daytime is usually manageable. Nights are not.

Getting up repeatedly, wandering with dementia, help to the bathroom, worry that keeps you awake even when nothing happens. Weeks of broken sleep wear down judgment and patience in a way that is almost impossible to see from inside.

If nights are the problem, that’s an overnight shift or 24 hour home care, not more daytime hours. It’s the single change that puts most couples back on their feet.

When the children live far away

Many do. They help with money, paperwork and phone calls, which is real help, but it isn’t a hand at four in the afternoon.

Be specific when they ask what they can do. People who are vague get vague help. “Can you take over the insurance and the bills entirely” is answerable. “I’m fine” is not.

Respite is not giving up

Respite care exists for this exactly. A few hours a week for your own appointments. A weekend so you can see your sister. A week so you can actually rest.

Book it before you’re desperate. A caregiver your wife already knows is a familiar face when you need to be away, rather than a stranger dropped into the house in a crisis.

Starting small works

Most couples begin with two mornings a week. Help with washing and dressing, a meal cooked properly, some company for them and an hour off for you.

It’s enough to change the week, and it costs a fraction of full cover. From there it moves as it needs to.
