GOLDEN YEARS HOME CARE

(916) 333-0383

Most families ask this question third or fourth, after they’ve already decided they need help. It’s worth asking first, because the answer changes what’s possible.

Here’s how in-home care actually gets paid for, and which of these is likely to apply to you.

Private pay

This is how most in-home care is paid for. The family or the client pays the agency directly, usually by the hour.

You’re billed as you go, there’s no long contract, and the hours can go up or down as needs change. Plenty of families start at a few hours a week specifically because it keeps the cost manageable while they work out what’s actually needed.

Long-term care insurance

If a policy is in place, this covers in-home care, and it’s the most commonly forgotten option.

A lot of people bought these policies decades ago and the paperwork is in a drawer somewhere. Before you assume there isn’t one, check. Ask your parent, look through their files, call their insurance agent if they had one.

Policies usually need documentation before they start paying, often an assessment showing help is needed with a certain number of daily activities. Agencies deal with this regularly and can help with the paperwork.

Veterans benefits

This is the one families miss most often.

Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for benefits that help pay for in-home care. Eligibility depends on service history, income and care needs, and the application takes time, so it’s worth starting the conversation early rather than after you’ve ruled it out.

If your father or mother served, look into it before assuming it doesn’t apply.

What Medicare does not cover

Medicare does not pay for non-clinical in-home care. This surprises nearly everyone, and it’s the single biggest misunderstanding families have about paying for care.

Medicare covers home health, which is a different service: clinical visits ordered by a doctor, usually for a limited period after an illness, surgery or hospital stay. Help with bathing, dressing, meals, errands and company is not part of that.

The two can run alongside each other. A home health provider might visit twice a week after a discharge while a caregiver comes daily to handle everything else.

California state programs

Some families qualify for state programs that help with in-home support. Eligibility depends on income and level of need, and the process is separate from anything an agency arranges.

It’s worth asking about if cost is the main barrier, even though the waiting and paperwork involved can be considerable.

What it usually works out to

Cost depends on how many hours you need and what kind of care. A few hours a week for company and errands is a very different number from around the clock support.

The honest way to find out is to have someone look at the actual situation and give you a figure. That’s what the free in-home assessment is for, and the number you get should be a real one rather than a starting range.

A note on starting small

If cost is the worry, starting small is genuinely an option and it’s how most long arrangements begin. A few hours a week to cover the hardest part of the day costs a fraction of full coverage, and it often prevents the crisis that forces a much more expensive decision later.
